1

Call, text or send the form

3

4

Cut out and rebuild

Damage is cut out square, the base fixed and compacted, tack coat applied, then hot mix laid and rolled.

What asphalt damage on the Gold Coast usually looks like

Local weather and ground conditions decide how asphalt fails here, and how it should be repaired.

Summer storms and heavy rain asphalt damage Gold Coast

Summer storms and heavy rain

Gold Coast summer storms bring heavy rain fast. Water gets into any crack or tired patch, softens the base underneath, and potholes open up across driveways, car parks and resort entries within days.

Sand, salt air and high water tables asphalt damage Gold Coast

Sand, salt air and high water tables

Along the beachside suburbs and canal estates, many pavements sit on sand with a high water table. When water gets under the base, edges break away and patches sink, and constant traffic speeds it up.

Hinterland slopes and run off asphalt damage Gold Coast

Hinterland slopes and run off

Steep driveways and access roads in Tamborine Mountain, Mudgeeraba and the hinterland carry fast run off. Edges scour out and joins open up, so drainage gets checked on every repair.

Noticed a small hole or crack forming?

This is the cheapest moment to deal with it. Here is what is happening underneath, and what to do.

Small holes let water in

Asphalt is close to waterproof, but the crushed rock base under it is not. A small crack, loose stones or a tired patch lets rain run straight into the base. The base softens, fine material washes out, and the surface above loses its support.

Asphalt is only as good as its base

The black surface is a thin wearing layer, often 30 to 50 millimetres on a driveway. The compacted base underneath carries the weight. Once the base fails, the asphalt fails with it, however good it looks on top.

Then it grows, fast

Every car that drives over a weak spot flexes it a little more until it breaks apart. That is a pothole. In a wet Gold Coast summer, a crack you could seal for very little can become a hole that needs digging out in a matter of weeks.

What to do when you spot a small hole or crack

1

Take a photo now

A close up with something for scale, and a wide shot. It helps you see if it is growing and helps us price it.

2

Keep water moving

Clear leaves and dirt from nearby drains and gutters so water runs off rather than sitting in the crack.

3

Skip the bag of cold patch

Cold patch is fine for a few days as a make safe, but it does not seal or bond. Water keeps getting in underneath.

4

Get it sealed or patched early

Text a photo to 0495 031 900. Small cracks can often be sealed, and small holes patched, before the base fails.

Asphalt facts most people do not know

A little background makes it much easier to understand what your driveway or car park actually needs.

Mostly rock

Asphalt is mostly crushed rock and sand. Only around five percent of the mix is bitumen, the sticky black binder that holds it all together.

Laid hot

Hot mix is made and laid hot, roughly around 150 degrees, and has to be compacted before it cools. That is what makes it dense and waterproof.

Bitumen or asphalt?

Australians often say bitumen for any black road. Strictly, bitumen is the binder. A bitumen seal is sprayed bitumen with stone chips, while asphalt is premixed and laid hot.

Very recyclable

Old asphalt can be dug up, crushed and reused in new asphalt. It is one of the most recycled construction materials around.

The sun ages it

UV and heat slowly harden the bitumen. Older asphalt gets brittle and cracks more easily, which is why crack sealing matters as a surface ages.

Drivable the same day

Unlike concrete, which needs days to cure, a hot mix repair can usually take traffic within a few hours of being rolled.

What does asphalt repair cost on the Gold Coast?

Every job is priced on site conditions, so the fastest way to an accurate number is a photo and a quick look. These are the things that move the price.

Size and depth of the damage

A shallow pothole is a quick patch. Deep failures need more digging, more base material and more asphalt.

Condition of the base

If the base under the asphalt has gone soft, it has to be dug out and rebuilt. That is the biggest single cost difference between jobs.

Access and site setup

Easy truck access keeps costs down. Tight sites, traffic control or working around customers adds time.

How many repairs on one site

Several repairs done in one visit cost less each, because the crew, truck and roller are already there.

When the work is done

Standard hours cost less than nights, weekends or emergency callouts.

Damaged asphalt cut out ready for a hot mix repair

Why one repair is cheap and another is not

Two potholes can look the same on top. The difference is usually underneath. A sound base means a quick patch. A failed base means digging it out first. We check before we price, so the quote does not change on the day.

How to choose an asphalt repair contractor on the Gold Coast

Eight things to check before you hire anyone, us included.

How will the repair be done?

Ask if the damage is cut out and the base fixed, or just filled. Filling a hole is not a repair.

Hot mix or cold patch?

Cold patch is a temporary fix. Permanent repairs should be hot mix asphalt, rolled and compacted.

Is base repair included?

If the base is soft, new asphalt on top will fail again. Make sure the quote covers it.

Is a tack coat used?

A bitumen tack coat bonds new asphalt to the old. Without it, patches lift at the edges.

What compacts it?

A roller or plate compactor should finish every repair. Asphalt that is not compacted breaks up early.

Is the quote written and itemised?

You should see each repair area and its price. A single round number can grow once work starts.

Are they insured?

Ask for a current certificate of public liability insurance, especially on commercial sites.

Can they show recent work?

A genuine operator can show photos of repairs they have done nearby and tell you where they were.

Hot mix repair or cold patch?

Cold patch has its place as a temporary make safe. For a repair that lasts, this is the difference.

Hot mix repair

  • Damage cut out squareBack to solid asphalt so there are clean, strong edges.
  • Base fixed and compactedSoft or wet base removed and rebuilt.
  • Tack coat bonds new to oldStops the patch lifting at the edges.
  • Laid hot and rolled flushDense, sealed and level with the surface around it.
  • Lasts for yearsBonded into the pavement, not sitting in a hole.

Cold patch fill

  • Shovelled into the holeNo cutting, so loose broken edges stay in place.
  • Base left as it isThe soft base that caused the pothole is still there.
  • No bond to the old asphaltWater gets in around the edges.
  • Tamped down, not rolledStays loose and ravels under traffic.
  • Often fails within monthsLifts out after rain, and the hole comes back bigger.

Who is responsible for fixing a pothole?

It comes down to who owns the surface. Here is the usual split on the Gold Coast.

Your driveway or property

Driveways, paths and private roads on your property are the owner's responsibility. That is where we come in.

Body corporate and strata

Shared driveways and car parks in a complex are usually common property, managed by the body corporate or strata manager.

Commercial car parks

Shopping centres, service stations and business car parks are looked after by the owner or the property manager.

Public roads

Local streets belong to City of Gold Coast. The Pacific Motorway, Gold Coast Highway and other state controlled roads are looked after by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Report potholes on those directly to them.

Suburbs we service around the Gold Coast

The whole Gold Coast, from Coomera to Coolangatta and back into the hinterland. If your suburb is not listed, call us. We almost certainly cover it.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what people ask us most.

How much does asphalt repair cost on the Gold Coast?

It depends on the size of the area, how deep the damage goes, the condition of the base and access to the site. Small pothole repairs cost far less than resurfacing, and you get a fixed written quote before any work starts. Send a photo or call 0495 031 900 for a free quote.

Do I need to replace the whole surface, or can you just fix the bad spots?

In most cases just the bad spots. If only sections have failed, we cut out and repair those areas, which is quicker and far cheaper than a full resurface. If a larger area really needs doing, we will tell you straight.

How long does a repair take and when can I drive on it?

Most repairs are done in a single visit. Hot mix is rolled and compacted on site, so the surface is usually ready for traffic the same day, often within a few hours.

Do you do emergency asphalt repairs?

Yes. Potholes and collapses that are a trip hazard, a liability risk or stopping traffic are prioritised. Call 0495 031 900 and tell us what is happening.

Why is a hot mix repair better than a cold patch?

Cold patch is pushed into a hole with no preparation and tends to lift out under traffic and rain. A hot mix repair has the damage cut out, the base fixed and a tack coat applied, so it bonds to the surrounding asphalt and lasts.

Do you do small jobs and new asphalt?

Yes. No repair is too small, from a single pothole on a home driveway to large car parks. We also lay new asphalt driveways, access roads and hardstands.

Who fixes potholes on public roads?

Potholes on local streets are the responsibility of City of Gold Coast, and state controlled roads are looked after by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. We repair private driveways, car parks, private roads, body corporate and commercial sites.

What areas of the Gold Coast do you cover?

The whole Gold Coast, from Coomera to Coolangatta and back into the hinterland. That includes Surfers Paradise, Southport, Broadbeach, Robina, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, Coolangatta, Nerang, Helensvale, Coomera, Ormeau and everywhere in between.
