When an asphalt problem becomes an emergency

Most asphalt damage starts small and gets worse slowly. An emergency is when it suddenly becomes dangerous. That might be a pothole that has opened up overnight in a busy car park entry, a section of driveway that has collapsed after heavy rain, or asphalt that has sunk around a pit, drain or grate so that wheels drop into it.

Other common emergencies we get called to on the Gold Coast include washouts along the edge of a driveway or access road after a storm, failed patches lifting out on a truck route, broken bitumen at the entry to a shopping centre or service station, and trip hazards in walkways that a safety officer, insurer or property manager has told you to fix now. If people or vehicles are at risk, treat it as urgent and call us.

What to do right now while you wait

Keep people and cars away from the damage. Put a cone, wheelie bin, barrier or anything highly visible over or around the hole so nobody steps or drives into it, especially at night. If it is in a business car park, let staff know and consider closing that bay or lane.

Take photos from a distance and up close, with something like a shoe or a drink bottle in the shot for scale. These help us plan the repair before we arrive, and they are useful for your insurer and your own records. If the hole is next to a gas, water or power pit, or water is bubbling up through the surface, stay clear and contact the service provider first. Then call or text us on 0495 031 900.

How an emergency asphalt repair works

When you call or text, we ask where the job is, how big the damage is and what is at risk. Photos make this much faster. We then lock in the quickest time we can get a crew and truck to you.

Wherever possible we do the full hot mix repair on the first visit so it is fixed once, not twice. The damaged asphalt is cut out square, back to solid material. The base underneath is checked, and any soft or wet material is dug out and replaced with compacted road base. A bitumen tack coat goes onto the base and the cut edges, then hot mix asphalt is laid, raked to level and rolled flush with the surface around it.

If a permanent repair needs more time or more material, such as a large collapse or a deep base failure, we make the area safe straight away and book the full repair at a time that suits your site.

Why emergency holes appear so fast after rain

Asphalt itself is close to waterproof. The crushed rock base underneath it is not. Once water gets through a crack or an old patch, it softens the base and washes out the fine material that holds it together. The asphalt on top loses its support, and the next car or truck that drives over it pushes it down and breaks it apart.

That is why so many potholes seem to appear overnight after a wet week on the Gold Coast. The damage was building underneath for months. The rain and traffic simply finished the job. An emergency repair that only fills the hole with cold patch leaves that soft base in place, which is why those quick fixes so often fail again within weeks.

After hours and out of trading hours

Plenty of emergency asphalt repairs are on sites that cannot shut during the day. Shopping centres, service stations, fast food drive throughs, medical centres, schools and industrial yards all need to keep traffic moving. We can work early mornings, nights and weekends by arrangement, so the car park, entry or access road is open again before you start trading.

Work areas are coned and barricaded, and the job is staged so customers, staff and deliveries are kept clear of the crew and machinery. Most hot mix repairs can take traffic within a few hours of being rolled.

Who calls us for emergency repairs

Property and facility managers looking after commercial sites. Body corporate and strata managers with a shared driveway that has broken up. Shopping centre, service station and fast food operators. Schools, churches, sporting clubs and councils. Builders and civil contractors with a failed section of asphalt or bitumen holding up a job. And homeowners right across the Gold Coast whose driveway has suddenly given way after a storm.

Reduce your liability

A known pothole or trip hazard on a commercial site is a claim waiting to happen. If someone trips, rolls an ankle or damages a car, the first question is usually whether the owner knew about it. Getting it repaired quickly, with photos showing what was done and when, protects you and the people using the site.

We can provide before and after photos of every emergency repair for your records, insurer or body corporate committee.

Public roads are different

If the pothole is on a public street, it is not your responsibility to fix and we cannot repair it. Local streets on the Gold Coast are looked after by the local council, and highways and main roads are managed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. If a pothole on a public road is causing a crash or someone is in danger, call 000. Otherwise report it to the council or to Transport and Main Roads on 13 19 40.

We repair private property: driveways, car parks, private roads, body corporate complexes, commercial and industrial sites.
